| 1921 | Richard Massey, aged 40, was conducting a peal of Grandsire Caters at Manchester Cathedral to mark its quincentenary when, after two hours and fifty minutes ringing he fell backwards, hitting his head, with his rope flying all over the tower. He was unable to be revived, and was later found to have died of a blot clot on the brain. | nv |
| 1930 | 17,687 Grandsire Cinques was rung at Painswick, Gloucestershire, in 11 hours and 32 minutes. James George, who was seventy-seven at the time, rang the 26 cwt tenor. The peal was subsequently proved to be false, but the local band erected a board recording it as the longest length of Grandsire Cinques rung. | nv |
| 1946 | What was probably the first handbell ringing, and possibly the first time bells of any sort were rung on TV, was on “Quiz with Hale” on this day. The session opened with E M Atkins, Douglas Birkshaw and Geoffrey Dodds sitting in a “circle” and ringing three leads of Plain Bob Minor, conducted by E M Atkins, only without handbells! The camera then switched to the presenter, Lionel Hale who posed the question; “What would these people usually be doing?” They then picked up the bells and rang the touch. | Letter: GD |
| 1968 | The first peal by a band all with the Christian name of “Andrew” took place at St Andrew, Halstead, Essex. The method was Plain Bob Major, and the conductor was Andrew S Hudson. Two others have been rung, one of 8-spliced Surprise Major at St Andrew the Great, Cambridge on December 3, 1989 and one of Yorkshire Surprise Royal at St Andrew, Ewerby, Lincs, on December 2, 1990. | 1976 | David C Brown became the youngest ringer at this time to achieve 1000 peals shortly after his twenty-fourth birthday. They had taken him just ten years and fifty-three days. | PPR |
| 1991 | Members of the Bath and Wells Diocesan Association rang seventeen extents of Minor - all different methods - to a peal of 12,240 changes at Ston Easton, Somerset in 5 hours and 34 minutes, conducted by A P Peck. It was the longest peal for the Association. On the same day Paul Smith rang the 72cwt tenor at Exeter Cathedral single-handed for 4 hours and 34 minutes to a peal of four spliced Surprise Maximus. | nv |
