On This Day - 7th October

At one time The Ringing World had a feature called On This Day where notable events from the past were listed.

Unfortunately, the events weren't related to ringing. This web page is a ringing version of On This Day.

1711The Journal of the Royal Society (Philosophical Transactions, 1711, Volume 25, page 528) has this report by John Chamberlayne. “In the Parish of Sampford-Courtney near Oakhampton in Devon, on the 7th of October, about 3 or 4 a Clock in the Afternoon, there was a great darkness as the Minister was Catechising the Children, that he could hardly see with Spectacles: And as soon as Prayers were over, some young men went to ringing, as commonly they used to do; and there were several People in the Church Porch talking; and of a sudden, a great Fire-Ball fell in between them, and threw some one way, some another; but no-one was hurted. The Ringers said, they never knew the Bells go so heavy in all their lives, and were forced to leave off: And being very weary, and looking out of the Belfrey into the Church, saw 4 Fire-Balls more, a little bigger than a Man's Fist, which of a sudden broke to pieces; so that the Church was full of Fire and Smoak.”nv
1890The memorial fund to Henry Johnson, who died on January 7, 1890 was closed. A total of £22-7-6d had been contributed.nv
1911Gillett and Johnston cast a new ring of ten for Hillingdon, Middlesex, which were dedicated on this day. According to the report, they were the gift of Mr J F Stillwell, of Moorcroft, Hillingdon, and the parishioners. It also noted that they were tuned to Canon Simpson's principle, and were the closest ring to London so tuned.nv
1978Members of the Worcester and Districts Association rang their longest peal with 18,891 Stedman Caters at All Saints, Worcester. The peal, composed and conducted by John Pladdys, took 12 hours and 2 minutes. They had intended to ring 26,019 changes but had shortened the peal due to illness. Three weeks later members of the Ancient Society of College Youths rang one nearly four thousand changes longer. See October 28, 1978.nv
19785056 Pudsey Surprise Major was rung at Weedon Bec, Northants, by a band all with the first name of “Christopher”. See October 22, 1977 and October 6, 1979.NP
