1788	The first peal of Stedman Cinques, 6204 changes, was rung in 4 hours and 47 minutes at St. Martin-in-the-Fields for the College Youths, composed and conducted by Thomas Blakemore. The peal board modestly states: “an instance of that unrivalled merit only to be equalled by a similar assiduity and perseverance”. Nearly thirty years were to pass before a longer peal was rung - although to be fair, only two other peals of Stedman Cinques were rung in the intervening period. 1804	The Northampton Mercury of October 13 records: “On Saturday last October 6th a singular and Melancholy accident happened at the new Church, Dagenham, Essex. The Society of Cumberland Youths were invited to open the new Peal of Bells which they performed in the Morning by Ringing 7008 Changes of Oxford Treble Bob Royal in 4 Hours and 49 Minutes and in the Evening Mr Channon Master of the Society wished to oblige the Inhabitants of the Village with another Peal, when unfortunately his Leg got entangled in the Rope which drew him to the next Loft and falling on his Head he was killed on the spot.” Two things are wrong with this report. In 1804, Thomas Mears only cast a ring of six bells for Dagenham, and Malachi Channon, still hale and hearty, rang his last peal 15 years later at Bethnal Green!	RW1991/78
1849	William Booth of Sheffield died. Born in 1783 he had rung in the first peals of Oxford Treble Bob Major, Royal and Maximus on handbells. He was the grandfather of Thomas and Charles Hattersley, also well-known Sheffield ringers.	nv
